  • Drake is A+ On Pinterest

    February 3rd, 2012 / Comments (0)

We're not huge pinners ourselves but Drake is doing pretty great things on Pinterest. They're doing it "right" according to those in the know (though their "Explore Des Moines" section doesn't have any of our usual haunts).

We've been harsh to Drake for some of their marketing efforts but it appears that things are turning around. Is Drake Marketing picking their game up or is it someone outside the University?

Because the best way to promote your "Creativity Summit" is with something uncreative. That gets the juices flowing. On a related note, is anyone going to this?

Nothing says "buy this shirt" like shitty explosions and strange screech sound effects. We'll skip this Hawkeyes tee and get one from Raygun instead.

  • The Printer of The Future

    February 1st, 2012 / Comments (0)

There's a new printer on the market that's making news everywhere. It's called MakerBot and it's the first consumer grade 3D printer. This means you can print toys/prototypes/stuff instead of having it shipped to you from some factor in China. This won't come as a surprise to followers of CES but we have something that will.

MakerBot founder Zach "Hoeken" Smith is an Iowa native! He grew up in Solon, IA before moving to Brooklyn to set up shop (we're sure college happened somewhere in there). Add his name to the list of Iowans helping shape the future.

MakerBot is currently selling two models the single-color "Thing-O-Matic" and the dual-color (and larger) Replicator. Check out the video below and go order one of you could use it in your shop. We could see 8/7 Central doing cool things with this.

And a whole host of other improvements. Some of the slick new features include a bunch more work, a factory tour (complete with their "Turd Polish" sign), and a brand new blog. They also plan to have merch on the site soon so you can masquerade as a foreman. We're hoping for Foreman Carl masks!

Co-owner Gina Adam filled us in on how the whole thing came together:

"It was a long time coming (2 years, really) but well worth the work. Blue Compass Interactive helped us with the programming and functionality. They were great partners because we told them what we wanted to do and they made it work fabulously."

Go check it out and let us know what you think. We love the "place an order" tab.

  • Would The Real Designers In Des Moines Please Raise A Hand?

    January 26th, 2012 / Comments (0)

We can't be the only ones who have noticed that there's a lot of crappy design work around the city. Poorly done typography, layouts, and design in general. It's pervasive, and a problem if we want to actually be taken seriously as a creative community.

What set us off this time is this poorly done logo (if you can even call it that) for the Fight For Air Climb. The copy is also uninspired but great design can make up for mediocre copy. Not that that's what we want. There's so much opportunity to make something great when you're working with a charity. Why throw that away?

If you're in need of new business and see awful design, pick up the phone. It's that simple. There are a myriad of companies here who are simply too ignorant that their design is bad.

If it's an agency problem then our message is this: step your game up. If you call yourself a designer you must have some idea of what good design is. If it's just a job then kindly close up shop and let talented people get the work.

  • Dickinson Law Rebrands, Releases Beautiful New Website

    January 25th, 2012 / Comments (0)

Excuse us while we pick out egotistical jaws off the ground. Flying Hippo designed a great new website for Dickinson Law that doesn't suck like the sites of most other firms. There's a few details we could nitpick but it's a great site over all.

We're really starting to dig Flying Hippo's style. Along with 8/7 Central they're helping set a standard for other agencies here.
