How to make ambient ads work: go all the way over the top

A Memphis, TN creative team came up with a very successful ad to promote a minor-league baseball team's home stand: a car completely covered in "bird droppings" is very, very noticeable on the street. It's an idea that can only work one way: when completely overdone.

Here’s what the agency had to say:

To promote a home stand for the Memphis Redbirds, a minor league baseball affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, we covered a car in fake bird droppings and parked it near a busy intersection with a sign that read, “The Redbirds are in town.”

How's this one working for you? Brilliant, or a bit too gross?
